Why I choose Wholefood Nutrition for my daily multi-V & my Prenatal vitamin!
What exactly does WHOLEFOOD nutrition mean? It simply means nutritional support for our body that comes from real food and nothing else (nothing synthetic or isolated).
Did you know that most of the supplements on the market are synthetic? Do you know how bio-available they actually are in your body? That means, how many of the ingredients that are listed on the label are actually entering your bloodstream, into yours cells and doing you good. It’s very common nowadays with the low quality, synthetic supplements that are on the market, that only a small amount of the product is actually being absorbed into your body and having an effect. Have you ever purchased vitamins and then wondered why your wee is bright yellow (eeek)? And have you ever taken a multi-vitamin, just because you should, and never felt any different?
I have nearly always supplemented myself someway or another, usually under professional guidance from an Applied Kinesiologist, Nutritionist or Naturopath for example, even before I had an understanding of bio-availability and all that jazz, but it wasn’t often that I actually noticed any huge difference in my health and wellbeing when I was taking them. There could be many reasons for this, however most likely it comes down to the quality of the supplement.
I am incredibly grateful that a fellow Chiropractor introduced me to an amazing nutritional supplement which is purely sourced from food. It makes sense to me, that the reason we take vitamins, is because we’re not getting what we are supposed to get from our food. So why take something that’s fractionated and isolated, when you can get it from wholefood nutrition that’s packed full of phytonutrients and our bodies are able to thrive off. Our food is where we are supposed to get our nutritional support from, but in todays society, when we are too busy to prepare nourishing meals, our soil is too depleted to provide us with good nutrients in our food & it isn’t always an option for us to buy fresh, organic produce, we need additional support for our body systems (especially our nervous system) to function at a high level. When I consider this, I make the choice to support my body from real food like we are meant to, rather than from a synthetic supplement. (By the way, there are some synthetic supplements that are EXCELLENT! Sodium ascorbate being one that I DO choose to take in its synthetic form because the pros outweigh the cons in this situation, however for the day to day sake of getting vitamins, minerals & trace minerals into my body, I prefer to choose a wholefood source rather than an off the shelf multivitamin.)
I will add in here, that I first started supplementing myself this way when I was amongst the many who ‘suffer’ from post-natal depression…. Or at least DEPLETION. I am not saying that this form of supplementation is the be all and end all of how we should help ourselves nutritionally however I realise now, that at the time, I was severely depleted of the nutrients that my body required in order to function well and support the demands of my breast fed baby. For me, this wholefood nutrition was exactly what I needed. I have continued to support myself and my family with this form of nutrition, and have consequently noticed that we have had increased and sustained energy levels, better immunity, improved mental clarity and better digestion among other things. I have also chosen this form of supplement as my PRENATAL vitamin during this pregnancy because it is just food and it is also NSF certified (NSF being an independent, 3rd party organisation that tests and certifies products). What this means is that what they say on the label is in the product is actually in there and nothing else (just google it 😉). During this pregnancy it has also supported the growth of my baby & provided me with great iron levels. It gives me so much peace of mind knowing that I’m flooding my body with the highest quality produce and I know exactly what is in there and how it is sourced.
Here are the perks of a whole food supplement. They are highly bio-available, this is because it is just food, so our body is able to recognise it and use it like it is meant to. Good quality wholefood nutritional supplements are made from plants that are grown using organic principles. It is important that the plants (vegetables, fruits, berries, herbs, whatever they may be) are picked at peak ripeness so they contain the highest nutritional concentration. The produce is then pulped within hours of picking and dried at low temperatures to maintain the integrity of the enzymes and phytonutrients they contain, meaning that the quality of these products is top notch and the difference they can make to your health is super cool, helping your body to function at its best every day.
I’m definitely not suggesting that these are a replacement for eating nourishing meals with the best produce you can buy. But for me wholefood nutrition is a way to UP what I am already doing day to day, and is a fabulous and affordable health insurance policy.
Wholefood nutrition is becoming more and more recognised by respected nutritionists and biochemists. If you want to know which ones I recommend, feel free to send me a message or ask at your next appointment 😊.
